It’s no new news that you should be protecting your skin from the sun. Hopefully by now you’re already in the habit of applying SPF to your skin on a daily basis. But are you taking similar precautions for your hair? Even though you don’t notice visible damage (like a sunburn) with your hair, it can definitely become damaged from the sun. As we ease into the warmer weather, getting closer to summer, you should be protecting your hair from the sun. To keep your hair healthy and free of dry, frizzy, damaged locks read on as we share some of our favorite tips to protect your hair from the rays.
Make Conditioning Products Your Best Friend
One of the signs of sun damage to our hair is the result of dry, frizziness. This is because the sun causes are our to lose a lot of moisture and hydration. Knowing this, conditioning products need to be your new best friend to keep your hair protected from the sun. It’s suggested that using leave-in conditioning products can be incredible and helping to lock-in moisture throughout the day. Use a leave-in conditioner when you know you’re going to be out and about all day. Additionally, if you’re going to be at the pool or beach and in the water apply a leave-in conditioning product when you get out of the water to keep your hair as hydrated as possible throughout the day outside.
Get a Deep Condition into Your Locks
Using a leave-in conditioner when you’re going to be in the sun all day is one hydrating element, but that’s usually not enough. The sun can REALLY suck the hydration right out of your locks, which is why you should be sure to get into the habit of using a conditioning mask on your hair on a regular basis (once a week is ideal). Using a deep conditioning mask on your hair can help keep your hair stronger and protected, as well as help reverse any damage that’s been done to your hair previously. In other words, if you want to keep your hair healthy and shiny throughout the summer this is a non-negotiable hair care step.
Be Cautious of How Often You Wash Your Hair
While we’re all taught to wash our hair daily growing up, doing so isn’t the healthiest routine for our hair. When we wash our hair, our hair is stripped of its natural oils. This is why washing your hair too often can cause damage to your hair. Since our hair needs as much moisture and hydration during the summer months as possible, make sure that you’re not washing your hair more than you absolutely need to. It’s suggested that most hair types should be washing their hair no more than 2-3 times per week. This helps keep your hair’s natural moisture locked in, keeping your hair well protected and hydrated during the strong sun months.
