Starting an Anti-Aging Skin Care Routine: What, When, How, and Why to Use

Published: January 6, 2015

In our teens and twenties, it’s somewhat commonplace to forget to care for our skin the way we are supposed to – and that’s generally okay. A quick wash in the shower is usually enough to suffice for normal skin, unless of course you have problematic skin and have issues such as acne or oily skin. College years are generally full of late nights, combined with inadequate sleep, and generally unhealthy diets – and those three combined can wreak havoc on our skin. It becomes apparent when we start to see acne and fine lines start to creep up on us that we need to modify our skin care regimen –and fast.

As we age, our skin care needs change. In our thirties, it becomes time to really buckle down and begin to care for our skin the way we should have been all along. Preventing aging with an anti-aging skin care regimen is the best way to ensure we look our best well into our older years.

Lionesse is proud to offer you some helpful tips and suggestions to help you develop an anti-aging skin care routine, and give you sound advice on the types of products you should be using, how often, and when. Read on for more helpful insight as to how you can be forever young.

Applying anti-aging skin care

First and Foremost: Begin a Daily Cleansing and Moisturizing Routine

Although you may not be used to doing so, cleansing and moisturizing your face, neck, and décolletage (the area surrounding your upper chest and cleavage area) is exceptionally important to fighting the signs of aging. If you haven’t been doing so up until this point, now is the time to start.

Choose products that contain vitamin A, collagen, elastin and retinols to provide the skin with the ingredients it needs to stay healthy and look young. As we age, many of these natural components found within our own skin begin to fade and falter, and it becomes apparent they need a boost when lines, wrinkles, spots and blotches appear from seemingly nowhere. Prevent it before it starts. Use the cleanser and moisturizer once in the morning, and once in the evening to remove debris, dirt, oils, cosmetics, and common pollution your skin has been exposed to from going about your day.

Applying eye cream / eye serum

Use Eye Serums

Under eye serums are the perfect fix for those pesky lines and wrinkles that begin to rear their ugly heads at us from out of nowhere. Choosing products which contain peptides and amino acids as well as Vitamins such as C, A, and E as well as Collagen will help to alleviate puffy, under eye bags, lines, and circles. They will also help to firm, tone, and tighten the skin, ridding you of the embarrassment of dealing with your skin beginning to sag before it actually happens. There are many high end eye serums from luxury brands that work beautifully. There are also many brands available at your local drug store which, although are of far less quality, they will work in a temporary situation. You should always choose products with the best ingredients that are sourced from well reputed companies.

Under eye serums should be applied before bedtime, and depending on the product’s ingredients, may only need to be applied once per week. Others require application once before bed every night. Be sure to read the product recommendations and follow them once you have your product in hand for optimal results.

Anti-Aging Facial Peels

Rather than inflicting damage on your skin by over exfoliating using harmful, harsh scrubs, opt for products that are meant to be applied like a mask to the face and neck, and then peeled off or rinsed off instead. Anti-aging facial peels contain special concoctions of vitamins, minerals, and firming components which adhere to dead skin, lifting the dead skin away from the body and leaving behind beautiful, radiant skin fit for a queen. You should use about a quarter sized amount to cover your face – more or less, depending on each individual, as every woman is different. These generally only need to be applied once per week, but may be applied twice per week until desired results are achieved. You will be amazed how beautiful your skin will look – and how young – once you begin exfoliating your skin the right way.

Choose products containing pure essential oils, vitamins, minerals, and natural ingredients. When possible, always opt for organic products as those are always best for your skin. Also, be sure to not only choose an anti-aging facial peel, but also – choose one appropriate for your skin type. This is important to ensure the longevity of your beauty.

Using a facial toner

Choose Anti-Aging Facial Toners

Facial toners are wonderful to refresh your face, tone and tighten, and also refresh your makeup throughout the day. They come in a variety of types, but one of the current favorite toners in the beauty world is rose water infused toners. They are also simple to make at home if you are feeling crafty, and can really boost your skin’s appearance. The anti-inflammatory properties within the rose itself make it a miracle for aging skin, because it eliminates the potential for puffy, exhausted eyes and swollen cheeks due to hormonal imbalances and other factors. Rose water toner also smells absolutely divine, and is usually crafted from natural ingredients.

If you are able, opt for either a rose water toner or one containing dead sea minerals for the ultimate in luxury. Simply spray on your face after cleansing and before you apply your moisturizer, and after you apply your foundation and other cosmetic products to set the products in place. Feel free to use throughout the day however you see fit to refresh your face and neck. These products can also be applied elsewhere on the body to tone, tighten, and refresh.

A sun made with sunblock on the shoulder

Protect Your Skin from the Sun’s Rays with Sunscreen

You’ve probably heard that the sun produces damaging UV rays which can cause cancer, and afflict your skin with age spots, wrinkles, fine lines and dry skin. The best method of protection against deadly melanoma from the sun and other skin damage is to apply SPF generously before heading out for the day. A good sunscreen for any woman consists of 30+ SPF, and should most definitely be applied to the face, forehead, and chest area, as well as any other areas of skin which may be exposed. Even during the cold winter months, the sun has the ability to send damaging rays into the skin. Always avoid problems before they begin – after all, this article is all about prevention. Reapply every 60 minutes if out of the water; if exposed to water, reapply every 30 minutes to ensure full protection. Only use enough to fully cover the skin; you don’t need to load the lotion on in excess of that.

We hope you have gained a great deal of insight as to the types of products you should use, how often, how much, and the ways in which you should use them to protect yourself from aging as best as you can. Lionesse Gem wants to see you succeed on your skin care journey to beautiful skin, and we hope you implement these tips into your own life and share them with those you love and care about.
